The Line Every Business Owner Needs to Find

Dear Fellow Business Owner,

I was sitting in a room recently with a group of women business owners. Different industries, different stages, different challenges. But when the conversation turned to finances something shifted. And then one woman said I get a report from my bookkeeper every month and honestly I don't fully understand what I am looking at. The heads nodded.

There is a version of business ownership that says you should understand everything, do everything, and if you do not you are somehow behind or not ready or not serious enough. I want to gently set that version down because it is not true and frankly it is costing you.

Your bookkeeper is not there to tell you how your business is doing. They are there to record what already happened. The categorizing, the reconciling, the organizing of transactions into something readable, that is their job and they are good at it. But the reading, the interpreting, the deciding what it means for next month, that part belongs to you. And nobody told you that. So you get the report, you see the numbers, and you quietly hope everything is fine because you are not sure what you are actually looking for.

Here is what I want you to start watching for.

Revenue versus expenses at a glance. Before anything else just look at whether more came in than went out. That is your starting point. Not the only point but the first one.

Gross profit versus net profit. Gross profit is what is left after the direct costs of delivering your product or service. Net profit is what is left after everything, rent, payroll, software, all of it. The gap between those two numbers tells you a story about your overhead and whether it is proportionate to what you are actually generating.

The line items that surprise you. Every month there will be something that costs more than you expected or something you forgot was still running. Those surprises are not embarrassing, they are information. Start a habit of finding them.

That is not everything. But it is enough to start having a different conversation with your numbers instead of just hoping they behave.

Here is the part I most want you to hear though.

Understanding what you are looking at is not the same as doing it all yourself. You started your business because you were brilliant at something. A skill, a service, a vision, something that made you think I could build something real here. The goal was never to become an accidental accountant or a reluctant operations manager buried in spreadsheets at midnight.

My job is to help you find the line. The line between what you need to understand and what you can confidently hand off. The line between where your energy creates the most value and where you are burning it on things that someone else could carry. The line between running your business and your business running you.

You do not need to know everything. You need to know enough to lead.

If you have ever sat in that room, nodded at that question, or stared at a report wondering what you are supposed to do with it, I would love to have a conversation.

That is exactly what I am here for.

With love and straight talk,

CJ Potter

Busy Is Not the Same as Profitable

Dear Fellow Business Owner, People walk into Serenity Sips and tell me how busy it is. How full the tables are, how good it feels in there, how it's clearly "killing it." I'm grateful every time, beca
